Masterclass Review: Michigan Fellows #1
by Jeannette Fang
The Michigan Fellows have had the opportunity to teach two masterclasses in the opulent Town Hall of Maiori. The first was on the first full day of the festival, July 2nd. Natalie Nedvetsky performed powerfully the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata no.23 in F minor, op.57. She was taught by Stijn DeCock, who displayed a thorough knowledge of the sonata with intelligent comments about tempo relationships and structure.
The second to play was Jewon Huang, who executed Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat Major, K333 with lightness and facility. Her masterclass was given by Jeannette Fang, who animatedly talked about communicating the music’s drama and developing intention behind phrasing.
The night ended with Umi Garrett playing Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, op.54, with expressivity and control far beyond her years. Kyoohye Lim gave her astute pointers about phrasing and voicing, as well filling Umi in about Schubert’s dual personalities.
It was such an honor to teach such talented young musicians!
